Chevy Volt HOV (Carpool) Lane Stickers

CA Green/White HOV Tags

update 3/18/2012:  This post has been updated with complete instructions, see the updated post at the California Chevy Volt Rebates and HOV Lane Sticker Page – 2012.

Good news, if you are in the market for a 2012 Chevy Volt, you will soon have access to HOV / Carpool lanes during commute hours without a 2nd or third passenger!  This is currently this is being rolled out in California, with other states soon to follow.

The catch is that you need to buy a 2012 Chevy Volt equipped with a low emissions package.  These are being made available for Volt’s built and sold in the state of California.  Keep in mind not ALL 2012 Chevy Volt have the low emissions package and will not qualify.  GM only started to produce the Volt’s with low emissions packages as of February, and will start to deliver low emissions Volt’s in March.

If you are on a dealer lot and want to make sure the Volt you are buying will qualify for an HOV sticker, you can check the VIN number of the Volt.  Look at the 5th position of the VIN for the letters (E, F, G, or H) For example, my Chevy Volt VIN number is 1G1RD6E4XBU100010.  The 5th position is a “D” so it does not qualify for HOV lane privileges.  Older Volts cannot be retrofitted to include a low emissions package so if you bought in the first year you are out of luck!

In addition, the Low Emissions 2012 Chevy Volts qualify for an additional $1500 rebate through the California Air Resources Board.

In California, you can apply for a Green HOV Lane sticker which will be issued to the first 40,000 registered qualifying vehicles.  (White stickers are for pure EV’s like the Leaf)  More details at the California Air Resources Board Page

To get the sticker, you’ll need to purchase a qualifying Volt and register with the DMV to get your sticker issued.  We’ll have a link to the forms and documentation when its available, but for now you’ll have to work with your local DMV for more info.

This should really help Volt sales in CA. A year ago the HIV lane was dominated by Prius, and now it’s full of Leafs (Leaves?). I look forward to seeing it full of Volts.

Do we know how long these stickers will allow us to be in the HOV lanes? The yellow stickers were short-lived.
