When Volts are available, here will be the place to talk about how to Detail, Maintain and Customize your Volt. Other good topics are charging (solar or otherwise) smartphone app usage, etc.

HiWay driving battery charging

Postby Noah44 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 8:43 pm

I wonder if driving on HiWay (on gasoline obviously) will ever charge the battery to full.
In other words, is the gas generator provides enough electricity for driving the car and charging the battery,
Will appreciate a reply. It will help me to decide if I should purchase a Volt.

The answer is no. When the ICE is running it tries to generate enough power to keep the car moving at your chosen speed. Going up a hill or adding some other load may require some extra power from the battery. When that power is no longer required the ICE will recharge the battery to it's original state and no more.
I have been able to the battery's charge level in mountains by going up the hills on the ICE (in Hold mode) and switching to Normal mode going down. It was a fun exercise, but not really practical.
