Our 2017 Volt loses power without warning and is unsafe to drive

Postby adamjohnson » Tue Jul 25, 2017 8:40 am

We have purchased 3 Chevrolet Volts so far. Two of them have been great. But the one we got in February (a 2017 Premier) from Hooman Chevrolet in Culver City, CA appears to be a lemon.

A few weeks after we got it, my wife was driving our daughter on the freeway when, without any warning, the car completely lost power. As you can imagine, this was an unpleasant experience for them. Luckily, no one was hurt.

We immediately brought the car back to the dealer (Hooman). After a few weeks of largely keeping us in the dark, they eventually told us that the car had been repaired and assured us that it wouldn't happen again.

But only a few days after we got it back, the same thing happened again. Luckily, no one got hurt this time either, but it was another very unpleasant experience. We called OnStar and after a couple hours of sitting by the side of the road, GM Roadside Assistance eventually came and towed the car back to Hooman again (where it has been sitting for the past week).

So far at least, the response from both Hooman & GM (including the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center in Detroit and their California Engagement Center) has been underwhelming. If they do get their act together and make things right, I'll be sure to update this post. But in the meantime, I'd have to say that if you value things like safety & reliability (not to mention your time & convenience), you might want to think again before buying a 2017 Volt.

Curious...Did they fix it? I had this problem with another kind of car and totally agree it's fun as a heart attack.
Wonder if Chevy monitors this forum. If they can't fix it they should give you a new one, and you may have the law on your side.

Hi Adam,

I am having the same problem with my 2017 Volt. 2 dead batteries in less than a week.
Battery gets drained in under 5 minutes and needs to be jump started (10V battery in the front and even battery in the back).
Even with half charge and some gas in the car.
Car displays many "service this part", "service that part" one after another and the car stops working altogether.

I am interested in finding out how it worked out for you guys.

I have a post here about being locked out of my 2017 Volt premier. Sounds like it might be related to your issue. I have not had a problem while driving, but I have parked buying gas or shopping for a few minutes to hours and when I tried to get into the car, it was dead. No lights, nothing. The first time I called Onstar and they could not find the car even though it was parked outside with a clear sky. The car 'magically' let me in after about 30 min. There is definitely something wrong with the electronics in the car. My dealer was of no help at all. They were friendly and offered to keep the car and have someone drive it until it happened. Since it has never happened 2 times in one month, that 'solution' would not work for me.
